For the first time in a decade, the number of low-income children eating summer meals saw a substantial increase year-over-year, according to a new report released by FRAC. Nearly three million children participated in the Summer Nutrition Programs in July 2013, a one-year increase of 5.7 percent.
The last bell is about to ring and kids are heading out the school doors to celebrate summer vacation. However, many will be returning to schools, camps and other programs where they can still receive a meal.
Kids that might not get dinner at home each night can now get a full meal at their after school programs. These meals can be easily accessible and they too are funded by the federal government.
